Clone Hubs are getting closer…

Finally, after a year of testing & development we have arrived at our final design for our highly anticipated Clone Hubs.

The front hub features a 7075T6 bolt style axle with 10mm bolts & special hardware. It has a very small shell design & will only come in 36 hole. The front hub weighs in at a mere 223 grams (0.49lbs)

The cassette hub features a ceramic bush inside the 9T driver. This design is much stronger & eliminates the failures caused by bearings exploding. We will offer an exclusive ONE YEAR WARRANTY on the driver. This kind of warranty is an industry first.

The axle is CrMo & is hollowed out & accepts an 8mm allen key for easy maintenance. The hub shell itself is as small as possible & will only be available in 36 hole. Left or Right hand drive versions will be offered & it has no titanium to be found, yet weighs in at an impressive 394grams (0.866lbs)

The Clone Hubs will be available worldwide late June 2008 in Black, Red or Purple.

Random stuff from Taiwan

Here are a bunch of random pics from the trip in Taiwan here so far. It’s been pretty productive & fun at the same time. We will release information on some of the 2009 products over the coming months. So stay tuned.

Report from Taiwan

We have been here in Taiwan the last few days working on the 2009 range of products. All is progressing to plan & I am very happy with the new products we have in the works.

For 2009 we will have a plastic pedal out which will be very light & inexpensive, our 2 piece cranks, CrMo Oneway pegs, front bolt style hub, cassette hub with ceramic bearing in the driver which we will offer a ONE year warranty. (This kind of warranty is an industry first) We also have a freecoaster coming out as well.

Add all these to the Hell Stallion frame & fork, Mick Bayzand ‘Teddy Bars’, The Cube flatland frame as well as a whole flatland range. Things are looking good for 2009 & Colony. More on all these in the coming weeks/months.

I am over here with Mark Matthews-Frederick, who is my right hand man when it comes to designing the parts you see from Colony. Read on below to get the low down on Mark & his job within Colony.

marktrails.jpg
Mark at his family trails back in Stanthorpe.

* So what’s your age and how long have you been riding for?

I’m 24 and have been riding pretty much all my life but BMX became an addiction for me in ’96.

* What got you into riding?

My brother and watching Jay Miron shred the King of Dirt on the old Wide World of Sports when I was about 11.

* What is your normal job?

I am an Industrial Designer for a train manufacturer, which means I design interior and exteriors of trains taking care of things like function, safety, comfort, looks, manufacturing and assembly.

* How did you get involved with the design side of things with Colony?

Well I have done a bit of bike design stuff in the past and Clint saw some of my work on the web, got in touch when he needed a hand with some more technical stuff and I’ve been working with Colony now for nearly 2 years.

* Has that always been something that you’ve wanted to work towards?

Yeah, for sure! I have always loved product design, so to combine it with something I have a real passion for is awesome.

* Please explain exactly what you do within Colony?

I work with Clint and Chris and the team guys in thinking up new parts, then detail the concept to maximise strength, function, looks, lightweight, etc. until we have a part that we are happy with, then I do the drawings so our manufacturers can create the part.

* What qualifications do you have for designing?

I have a Graduate Diploma in Industrial Design, which is a four year University course. Hard work but good fun.

* I believe this is your first trip over-seas? How do you like it so far?

Yeah its been awesome to learn the finer details of how all of our parts are made, and great talking engineering with the manufacturers over here, even though the language barrier hasn’t made it easy at times. Oh yeah and the food and beers here are pretty tops…

* Have you got the travel bug now?

Yeah a trip like this really opens up your eyes to what actually happens in other parts of the world. Our agent over here has really taken care of us so I have really enjoyed it.

* Any thanks?

My parents & family for all the good times, Clint and Chris for being cool, giving me the opportunity to do something I love and be part of the BMX industry; our agent here for helping us to make the best products we can and all the great experiences in the past few days; thanks to David from Fly Bikes for helping me to get to where I am today and everyone for supporting quality BMX companies like Colony.

Officially a sought after stem…

It’s official… Ryan’s Official Stem is one of our most sought after products. It is also one of our products that many PRO’s out there choose to run on their bikes even if it conflicts with their sponsors products.

Must be a reason for that? Maybe it’s the fact it’s one of the lightest stems out there? Maybe because it’s simple & not over engineered? Maybe because it looks so freaking good?

Who knows? All we know is that they are once shipping again as you read this. For those who have been waiting, the wait is almost over. The Official Stem will soon be available in plentiful supply once again…for a few weeks that is until they’re all gone again. So get in quick !!

This is the video section that earned Liam a spot on the Colony team & got him his own signature frame & forks (yes, forks now too) which will be called the Hell Stallion. Not due out till August this year but will be worth the wait. More info in the coming months.

Ryan’s Unlucky13 Bars, Official Forks, Sprocket & Stem are available worldwide right now. The stem has even been popping up on a few pro’s bike checks of late too, proving it is one of the most sought after stems on the market today.

Our Oneway pegs feature a unique internal design which makes them very light. They are basically thicker on the bottom where you grind & thinner on top where you don’t. See the pic below for what I mean. Simple. Another Colony original design.

Frames will now be delayed now until March 2008.

We have had some very stressfull days here working on a problem that has hit us this week.

I am very sad to report that we encountered a problem with our 2008 frames recently shipped worldwide. There has been a manufacturing fault discovered in that the BB shells are ovalised on all Bloody Oath, MVP & Sect frames for 2008. This in turn would make the BB bearings sieze up & not turn freely. This does NOT affect any 2007 model Sect frames out there.

As these frames were not up to our strict quality standards, I made the decision to have them re-called before they hit the markets around the world. I don’t want Colony products out there unless they are absolutely 100% perfect.

This problem does not affect the 2008 Sect Limited Edition complete bike I am happy to report.

I am sorry for the delay this will cause but in March it will be worth the wait. We are having them all made again & making sure this rare problem never occurs again.

I thank everyone out there who has supported Colony from day one. We here at Colony always strive to offer you the best possible products & we will continue to do so.

Vans / Colony collaboration Whip 2 shoe in the works…

vans.jpg

The last few days I have been hanging out with Jerry Badders the BMX team manager for Vans. Today he showed me around the Vans offices in California & I gotta say it’s a pretty cool set up. It’s a huge place with so much cool stuff to check out. They even have a nice mini ramp set-up as well. Definately BMX friendly too. I also got to check out Guettler’s new Whip 2 shoe in the flesh & it looks pretty damn cool to say the least.

We have been working with Vans now for a few months on a collaboration Whip 2 shoe with Colony & Vans. Expect to see it available Spring 2009 which means available January 2009. So yeah you will have to wait a while but it will be worth the wait.

I will post more info here once it becomes available.

Product highlight – Oneway Pegs.

Our Oneway Pegs are growing in popularity the world over & for few good reasons…

1. They are light weight due to their special design & construction. So much so, that some companies feel the need to ‘copy’ our special internal offset design with them being thicker on the bottom where you grind & thinner on the top where you don’t grind. See the diagram for details.

colonyonewaypeg1.jpg

2. They come with the optional built-in chain tensioner that is also removable. Giving you complete freedom on how you run your pegs. See picture below.

3. They come in a great range of colours.

onewaypegs.jpg

4. They grind just as fast if not faster than traditional crmo or titanium pegs. They also hold up to street use as Liam Fahy-Hampton & Mick Bayzand inform me.

Shane Badman in Portugal

Shane just dropped me a report from his recent trip…

Hey Clint,

Just got back from the Remax Fieldcontrol contest in Portugal. It was held in Portimao in the far south of the country where the worlds and other big contests have been over the years. The guys put a lot of effort into the weekend constructing a massive tent over the riding area and putting down about 30m2 of ply floor. Picked up and dropped off at the airport, crazy parties and good friends and that’s not to mention how awesome the beaches are…

I got The Cube built just a day before leaving for the contest and didn’t really get a chance to ride it properly until the day of the qualifiers. Rode it like crazy and got used to it really quick. The frame is sharp and responsive, but also really stiff and with plenty of room in all the right places. Being light-weight, it’s super easy to move around and takes little effort to get this bad boy moving. It got a lot of really positive comments from the other riders and people were really stoked on its simplicity and function.

Qualifiers went well. Pulled most of my stuff during my run and even some new stuff that I’ve just learnt. I wasn’t around for the results, but Frank Lucas told me I got third – stoked!

Results were only scored down to 5th place so I’m not sure where I placed. Despite all this, had a really good time, got to ride at an awesome spot hung out with friends and made some new ones. The Cube did it’s job super well, people were psyched on it and now it’s time to go think up some new tricks to learn.

Shane.

Matt is now officially a part of the flow team for Colony & has just put together a Hell Stallion prototype frame to test for us. It looks pretty good we think… but check the pics yourself.
