Cube flatland frame update

Shane Badman’s signature flatland frame is getting closer to reality. Here is one that my friend Ross Lavender, is in the process of building up. It wont come in this colour but it looks pretty fresh. Ross did the powder coating himself at Lewis & Sons Powder Coating.

In Shane news… he is about to make the move to Egypt to live & will have a job doing shows on a daily basis on some luxury resort. Sounds pretty good to me.

Mick Bayzand video

An old one but a good one none the less. Some of this was filmed about 5 years ago but can still hold its own today. Mick rules, always has, always will. He heads over to Vancouver to live for a couple years soon but I am sure we will continue to see & hear great things from him. Be on the lookout for some coverage from an upcoming farewell trip to Canberra with Liam Fahy-Hampton, Zac Miner & myself.

Alex Hiam web vid

Our latest web video is with our 12 year old ripper, Alex Hiam from Brisbane, Australia. Alex is on our flow team through Crossley Cycles & we filmed this section over the past 4 weekends.

I really like his riding because he has such a great mix of tech but check the video & make up your own mind. The best thing about Alex is his attitude towards riding. He is all about just having fun & is always smiling on & off his bike. Alex has the skills no doubt & I am looking forward to the years that lay ahead for this kid.

Vans / Colony collaboration Whip 2

Late last year I released the news that Vans & Colony were working together on a Whip 2 shoe with Ryan Guettler. Well, here are the first pics of what the shoe will look like. It’s a huge deal for us to have this honour to work with a company like Vans & were stoked. Some of the Colony team will be lucky enough to have sample pairs soon.

Expect the shoe to be available to the public January 2009.

Random shots…

I went out for a bit of an unexpected rail mission the other day with John Buultjens from Forgotten Bikes & Alex Hiam our flow team rider & got these quick shots. Nothing crazy but I was pretty stoked I did these first try.

Old school BMX show

On the weekend we had the old school BMX show here in Brisbane & it was a great time for sure. So many great old memories came rushing back & it was cool to see some old faces as well. Check out the pics from the day & get a taste of what it was like to ride in years so long ago, or so it seems? There were bikes from some of the greats of the past & some of the less known from back in the day. An old school flatland jam also busted out with many tricks that have been almost forgotten.

Clone Front hub update

I received the final sample of our Clone front hub today & it looks just how we wanted it. It features a 3 piece axle design with a very clean hub shell with a small flange diameter. Light, clean & simple… the way things are meant to be.

Colours available for the initial release in late June will be Black, Red & a limited edition White. Be on the lookout for additional limited edition colours of Tangerine & Grey in August.

A busy weekend ahead

If you’re in the Brisbane/Gold Coast region there are a few events on this weekend…

The grand opening of the new Elanora park is on Saturday & you could be lucky enough to win a Colony Endeavor complete bike courtesy of Helensvale Cycle Scene. You will also have the chance to see Tim Wood in action with a demo at the massive new bowl complete with a full pipe.

Then on Sunday there is an old school BMX show and shine which will show case BMX history from the very beginnings. Be sure to say happy birthday to Rob Lewis while you’re there.

MC’s new bike

I have the upmost respect for one of my friends who is responsible for getting me into this BMX thing all those many years ago. That guy is Michael Canfield. Back in 1988 I moved to Brisbane to start a new life & Michael & another guy, Bob Herbohn, were the first two new friends I made. They were doing tricks on their BMX bikes so I dusted mine off & started doing the same. 21 years on & here we are… still riding those little kids bikes.

I recently hooked up Michael with a whole slew of Colony stuff to make up a new bike & here it is in all it’s glory. Complete with a few custom mods & all. Michael sent me a bit of a bike check & cool email to go along with it. Check it out.

Hey mate,

Who would have thought back in the day we’d be riding bikes still, let alone ones that consisted mostly of components from a bike company that you started. Awesome. You’ve done a good job so far mate, to be the first Aussie bike company to get worldwide. Well done. At the very least you aren’t making Maxxims. Talk to you soon.

MC

Editors note: Maxxim was an old school Aussie BMX company back in the day.

‘Fantastic Plastic’ pedals update

It’s been a little while now since I have posted any news about our pedals. I thought it was about time to update you all.

The design has changed quite a bit from our original concept. The pedal is now much sleeker & the replaceable steel pins are gone due to reasons beyond our control. But it’s all good. We also did away with the half axle design due to its limitations in design.

Here is the final version of our ‘Fantastic Plastic’ pedal. Expect them out August in a range of colours. More info, including a photo of the actual samples will follow soon.

Colonial Cranks update

It’s been a while since I posted any news about the progress of our cranks but here are some sneak peaks of the final versions.

They are a 3 piece crank but work like a 2.5 piece crank. Meaning only one bolt holds them together saving weight & making them simpler. They feature a 19mm 48 spline axle that is hollowed out more than the average crank. The design offers high strength but affords considerable weight savings.

There will be two versions available… The street version will come in 170mm & 175mm lengths while the flatland version will come in 160mm only & suit micro gearing.

They will be available in Black, White & the first two limited edition colours will be Grey & Tangerine. Expect them out this coming August.

More new products for 2009

Here are the first concepts of our first flatland stem. This is so new that we haven’t even named it yet. It’s CNC’d from 6061T6 alloy & will come with the front 4 bolts hollow with the rear two solid. It gives the ride height of a top load stem but with the easy access of a front loader due to its angled front plate design. Expect it to be very light of course & of excellent quality.

It wont be available until at least late this year but both Simon & Shane will be testing it soon enough. I guess you could even use this stem for street/park as well for those that like a shorter reach stem?

Cube update…

Here are some sneak peaks of the final sample 2009 Cube frame straight off the production lines. This picture was taken before the frame was sent over for it’s full post heat treatment. Expect these to be available in August this year in either 18.0″ or 18.85″ top tube lengths.

Word has it that the mastermind behind the Cube, Shane Badman, is headed for Egypt to live for 6 months or so. Should be a welcome change in weather conditions from the cold winter he has endured in Europe.

Matt King & Toby Matthews web video

About 2 weeks ago I met up with both Matt & Toby one day after they finished work. The idea was to film for a web video in one afternoon. It was set in their local park (Helensvale on the Gold Coast, Australia) & we had about 2 hours of sunlight to get it done.

While dodging the masses of razor scooters they got some shit done & it turned out pretty good for an afternoon after a hard days work. Matt is a plumber & Toby is a painter… both of them can also ride a bike pretty damn well. Weekend warriors for sure.

Click here to check out the work they put in on this fine afternoon in April.

New 2009 stuff…

Here are some pics of our 2009 stuff set for release in August this year…

Teddy Bars… Mick Bayzand signature bars that are 27″ wide & 8″ high with 10.5 degrees back sweep & 2 degress up sweep. They also have a thinner 16mm diameter crossbar & an old school shape. Yeah yeah Mick !! Don’t forget to check out his recent webvid if you haven’t already, here.

We will also have a very limited edition ‘Canvas’ range of pivotal seats as well. These will be available in Slim & Mid styles. Early sample shown.

Liam will also have his own street ready forks to go along with the Hell Stallion frame that feature a 30mm offset for easier nosewheelies & the strength to match Liam’s street assasination skills.

All these will be available August the world over.

Mick Bayzand web vid

A few weeks ago Mick came up to Brisbane & stayed with me for a week. Mick must have had some kind of curse on himself because as soon as he got off the plane things started going slightly wrong in almost every way possible.

It all started with the worst 4 hour traffic jam from the airport on a trip that normally takes about an hour. On the first day it was a crazy 43.5 degrees celsius (110 degrees fahrenheit) heat wave while trying to ride. The 2nd day Mick re-injured his wrist from a feeble grind gone terribly wrong & then it rained for days on end after this. Over the last few days of his visit he totally wrecked his body over & over again in between the rain showers. But he kept getting back up for more, proving that Mick really is the toughest rider in Australia.

Check out his offerings from the days that he did get to ride without the rain, heat, injury or hangovers by clicking here now. I reckon you did an awesome job Mick & you’re welcome anytime at my place. Yeah yeah!
