Paddy Gross checks in…

Paddy Gross sent me an email on what he has been up to of late, read on below.

I’ve just got back from the Vans “Let it Ride” European tour and the Vans “BMX Chess” contest in Switzerland last weekend which was pretty fun. I got third place tie with Bruno Hoffmann with my Colony machine and it seems like there is a lot people who ride Colony parts. Dude seriously, there have been so much riders with Colony parts, it’s been awesome to see that. Also a lot of guys been stoked on my bike. Good thing I went there, had a good time and I think it’s been good that a Colony rider showed up, the kids been stoked. Achim was there as well, he was one of the judges and was riding the miniramp, its always good to see him ride you know.

Well I am preety much getting ready for the next things, tomorrow I am going to ride a demo in huge amusement park here in Germany and on Friday I am heading to Cologne for the People’s Store Jam at the North Brigade skatepark.

Cheers, Paddy.

Tim Wood wins Gold

I got a text late last night from Tim saying he had just won vert at the Asian X Games in China. So stoked for him. Sounds like he rode amazing with a 900 to start off with, then a mixture of no handed 5’s, normal 5’s, whips & flairs. He even beat some big names in the process. Congrats Tim !!

We have a winner !!

For those that were down at the BMX Games the other week some of you may have noticed the Hell Stallion frame giveaway we had in the official BMX Games program booklet.

Basically you had to send in a pic of yourself with one of the Colony team members present at the games. We had many entries & some really cool emails to go along with them.

But the winner is… Chloe from the Gold Coast. She won not only because of her photo but also because of the cool email she sent along with it. Read on below…

“Hi, My names Chloe from the Gold Coast.

I want to win the frame because I love BMX, my partner rides, my brother rides and I want to start !!! All the boys at Helensvale skate park have been teaching me on their bikes !!!

I was going to ask Ryan to paper, scissors, rock me for a Colony Poker Set !! But we already one of those.”

Congrats Chloe & enjoy your new frame.

BMX Games update

Pretty much the whole team is injured right now. The trip has taken it’s toll on us all. Yesterday was a huge day of sun burn, heat stroke, oh & some riding too.

Alex Hiam crashed hard on a double whip over the box in practice so didn’t get to ride in the expert finals. He is OK though so all good.

Peta Shepherd rode girls park & did well enough to get 2nd place even with a bar end to the stomach the night before.

Ryan & myself flew the flag in pro park. Ryan rode well enough to make the finals with some original lines that no one else did. He destroyed his back wheel & had to use mine on his second run & went for a double backie but slightly looped out. Ryan didn’t ride the finals though due to his 3 broken toes amongst other injuries. Smart move I say.

I just flopped around & did a few nose picks. I can hardly move today with the bruises I have from the trip. Feeling like an old man for sure, haha.

Simon O’Brien rode the pro flatland contest which was really cool to watch. It was good to see a legit flatland comp in Australia take centre stage with a really cool atmosphere. Simon rode well enough to score 2nd place. Stoked.

Happy Australia Day to everyone as well !!

Down Underground Series – Round 1

Read the report below from Shaun Jarvis for what went down in Perth recently…

Round one of the Colony Down Underground national flatland series went down in Perth Western Australia on the weekend of the 8th of November. It was one of the best weekends I’ve ever had in my life. I was overwhelmed with excitement when riders from Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Launceston all converged with the locals of Perth to ride flat. The concept of this series is awesome. Riders from all over Australia travelling to different cities and competing for a year end title. Competition will breed progression. But this series is more than just competitions. It’s also an opportunity to catch up with mates that you normally don’t get to see often, ride with new riders and promote flatland to others.

Thursday night was full of excitement with many trips to the airport to collect the eastern state riders.
Friday was a good day jamming at the Perth concert hall spot. We then headed up to Kings Park for some chillin and sightseeing. Then it was off to Hogs Breath Café for a good old man up steak dinner. After dinner and a few drinks a small jam took place out side the local Game Zone on the side walk. Good to push yourself on what can be done in such a small spot.

Saturday came too fast and it was off to the infamous Scarborough Beach multi level carpark to get the competition of the weekend under way. With a solid turn out stage one got started by way of a two hour jam session with the riders scored each other at the end. This allowed riders to be more relaxed and try harder tricks. After a break for lunch stage two got underway. This consisted of two, two minute runs. This meant that riders could show how dialled they can be in a competition format. I’m not going to write about what tricks were done by who, you will have to wait for the web footage to done. I will say however that Ben Moran was the talking point of most conversations. After the comp was all done it was off to the beach BBQ trophy presentation. Check the results to see who got what. From the beach every one was invited back to my home for the after party. All I can say is that it was big night with many liquids being consumed. If you weren’t there you missed out on some good times.

Sunday morning and it was a bit hard to rise but eventually I did. Today was all about hitting new spots and showing the out of towners a bit of Perth. First stop was Cottesloe Beach. Not much riding going on but lunch was more on the agenda. Then off to Fremantle. After seeing a random priest in full robe gear skateboarding we proceeded to hit a spot with a good vibe till Roni’s tyre blew and scared half of Fremantle. We then proceeded to roll through the streets to the beach spot for some good lazy style riding as most of us were still just coming good from Saturday nights merriment. That night after seeing the wonderful West Coast sunset it was a good old fashion pizza night, again at my house. Simple and functional.

With the arrival of Monday it was time to start getting people off to airports. The Brisbane crew were first of the rank with an early start. That left the rest of us to ride down at Hillary’s Marina. Some tourist gifts were purchased before it was time to get the Melbourne and Launceston riders to the airport.

With the leaving of the last of the Eastern State riders the amazing weekend came to a conclusion. Yes there was a competition that took place over the weekend but round one of the Colony Down Underground was more than just a competition. It was a gathering of flatland riders all sharing one common bond of having the most amount of fun on a bike possible.

I would like to send a big thankyou to Colony BMX for sponsoring the series. It’s great to see such a good Australian company supporting flatland in such a big way.

Thanks also go out to Backbone BMX as well as they really put a stack of product in for prizes. Rhysty is such a champion. The world needs more like him.

And lastly I would like to thank all the riders who showed up and rode and smiled and had such a blast of a time.

See you all in January for round two in Melbourne.

Shaun Jarvis.

Core Series but not really

Today I went to the Core Series final at Kuraby skatepark in Brisbane & it turned out to be a really good day. Alex Hiam ended up getting 2nd overall for the year in Pro & pocketed $250 towards the ‘Woodward’ fund. Stoked. I didn’t get around to taking any pics or getting any footage but I did capture this classic moment of a rider we all affectionately call, Snappa. He rules & this was definately the highlight while the skate finals were going. Pure BMX at it’s best. Enjoy.

Broken Bones Session

Better late then never but our distributor in the Ukraine, VeloJam, sent me this email about an event that happened over there a couple weeks ago & now I finally got around to posting it here. Read on below…

Yo Clint,

We just came back from a small but definitely nice event, called Broken Bones Session, held by VeloJam and sponsored with Colony, which took place yesterday in Kyiv at a small hand-made bike park. We had two categories – amateurs and pros. For the 1st place in pro we gave a way a Sect frame & many other Colony prizes.

We of course, experienced some probs with the weather, however, we did it! The dirt and water could not stop us to make those crazy people do some crazy stuff, like 360 from a drop or the flair in a small quarter.

Cheers, Bogdan.

Weekend up north report…

As reported myself, Alex Hiam & Peta Shepherd went up north for the weekend, namely for Tuckfest in Rockhampton. A great time was had by all & some riding was done. Both Alex & Peta ended up 3rd in the comp with Alex in pro & Peta in expert. Some great riding was seen from all the locals & there were plenty of riders from the surrounding towns like Mackay & Hervey Bay. It was a good day for sure.

On our travels we also hit up a few other parks along the way & had some sessions. We meet up with two sisters who ride by the names of Tahlia & Natalya Diehm. They both ride Colony Sect frames with Natalya on her Sect frame with many thanks to Chris Courtneay. He gave her the frame he won from the comp in Rocky, damn straight up awesome to see. In fact, everyone from the trip who won some prizes gave them back out to others who needed them more than themselves. So good to see. Alex even made some more fans & was asked for his first autographs… a star in the making for sure.

Shane rules – rain, hail or shine.

Shane Badman just sent me an email from the UK. Read on below to see what one of our most travelled riders has been up to…

Just got back from round 2 of the Grassroots series in Southsea, UK. It was held at the infamous Southsea Skatepark, home of the King of Concrete for many years. Moving the ramps out for the day, we had the perfect marble floor underneath it for the contest. As per the UK, rain was a constant threat with the clouds finally opening up & dumping it down right before Pro finals. As people had come from far & wide in the UK & beyond, we just decided to ride in the rain instead. When all was said & done I was lucky enough to bag 2nd place – stoked!
