Cube update…

Here are some sneak peaks of the final sample 2009 Cube frame straight off the production lines. This picture was taken before the frame was sent over for it’s full post heat treatment. Expect these to be available in August this year in either 18.0″ or 18.85″ top tube lengths.

Word has it that the mastermind behind the Cube, Shane Badman, is headed for Egypt to live for 6 months or so. Should be a welcome change in weather conditions from the cold winter he has endured in Europe.

New 2009 stuff…

Here are some pics of our 2009 stuff set for release in August this year…

Teddy Bars… Mick Bayzand signature bars that are 27″ wide & 8″ high with 10.5 degrees back sweep & 2 degress up sweep. They also have a thinner 16mm diameter crossbar & an old school shape. Yeah yeah Mick !! Don’t forget to check out his recent webvid if you haven’t already, here.

We will also have a very limited edition ‘Canvas’ range of pivotal seats as well. These will be available in Slim & Mid styles. Early sample shown.

Liam will also have his own street ready forks to go along with the Hell Stallion frame that feature a 30mm offset for easier nosewheelies & the strength to match Liam’s street assasination skills.

All these will be available August the world over.

Peta Shepherd just put together a 2008 MVP frame in 20.75. She wanted something a little longer than her Sect 20.5 which was actually one of the original prototypes that we ever had made.

Soon this frame along with all our 2008 frames will be available worldwide.

Thanks for everyones support out there & waiting patiently, we appreciate it.

Hell Stallion Forks… update

We received the final version of the Hell Stallion forks yesterday & we’re totally happy with how they came out. Liam will soon be smashing the shit out of these proving that they will indeed live up to their lifetime warranty.

Liam’s forks have a 30mm offset making it that little bit easier for nose wheelies. They also feature tapered legs with straight guage tubing for strength. You will also find street ready 6mm drop outs with weight saving CNC detail. Add all this up with an impressive weight of only 870grams (1.91lbs) & you have a pair of forks capable of standing up to Liam’s abuse.

They will be available firstly in kit form, along with the Hell Stallion frame, Official stem & our own headset in June/July or you can get them seperately in August/September. Liam Fahy-Hampton fans everywhere rejoice!

Colony in the UK… again!

Check this press release taken from the Alans BMX blogspot.

its-official.jpg

alans-colonygif.png

At a time when there are so many similar products out there, we really like Colony because a/ the stuff works and b/ Clint has tried hard to do things differently. We previously had a lot of success with Colony when Shindig did it and it would of been a real shame if it wasn’t represented in the UK. We are stoked with this partnership with Colony and plan on supporting it fully with a team and promotion. While we plan on primarily supplying Colony thru our alansbmx.com website, subject to costs and margins we would be happy to supply a small number of similar-minded dealers, interested parties can call or email us at sales@alansbmx.com

Product highlight – Oneway Pegs.

Our unique Oneway pegs have given birth to a slew of imitators. But that’s cool, as they say imitation is the best form of flattery. Our pioneering internal offset machining (meaning thicker on the bottom where you grind & thinner on the top where you don’t) makes our pegs some of the lightest around while still looking normal.

You can also get our pegs with or without an optional built-in chain tensioner to save you even more weight. Top that off with a large array of colours available & you have a a very popular peg.

For those that are dubious to the grindability of our heat treated 7075T6 alloy, just ask Liam or Mick next time you see them sliding some crazy rails.

Custom Chrome anyone?

We recently made Ryan some very custom chrome Unlucky13 bars & Official forks. Ryan wanted to have some to keep for a show piece in his house so we of course got them made for him. He also built up yet another new bike with these on them too. Check it out. Old school look for sure.

ryannewbike2.jpg

I also just received a very cool email from a rider in Australia by the name of Grant Armessen, who had his own Unlucky13 bars chromed out. Shown here with Kenny Raggett (yes, those knee pads are huge! haha) also check the Sect Ltd complete bike in the pic on the right as well.

Long live chrome… I know Ross Lavender will love that some Colony parts actually exist in chrome. Note… don’t expect any productions of chrome parts from us anytime soon.

However, if you do hunt around you may be able to find some of the chrome Bloody Oath bars that were released last year. If you’re lucky that is.

Lifetime Warranty on our frames.

Finally… after many many months (almost seems like years now) of waiting our range of 2008 frames are almost ready to ship out soon. The Sect, MVP & Bloody Oath frames are all getting heat treated right now & then soon will be painted ready to ship out. For all those we have been waiting patiently it will soon be over. Thanks for everyones support & understanding on these delays.

The big news on our 2008 range of frames is our revised warranty. We will now offer a LIFETIME WARRANTY against breakage to the original purchaser. This means if you snap or crack your frame & you’re the original purchaser, you will receive a new frame, no questions asked. We wont however warrant your frame if you bend or twist it as any frame will bend eventually after years of hard riding. I will update the warranty section of the website here with full details of our LIFETIME WARRANTY soon.

Check out the products page for full details on these frames including weights etc.

Hell Stallion Forks

It’s been a while since I have posted news about new products but expect more & more in the coming months.

Here we have the first sneak peaks of Liam Fahy-Hampton’s Hell Stallion forks to go along with his signature frame due out mid this year. These forks feature full heat treated Colonized tubing with weight saving drop outs. They are CNC’d from 6mm down to 5mm with an offset of 30mm. Making all those nose wheelie tricks that much easier. 10mm or 14mm drop outs will be on offer.

The fork legs are tapered from 31.8mm down to 25.4mm & use extra thick tubing for strength around the drop outs for all the peg tricks Liam likes to do. Weight of these ones are 895grams & they will come with our no questions asked LIFETIME warranty.

Expect them out in kit form with the Hell Stallion frame, Official stem & one of our headsets in June this year. You will be able to get them seperately in August.

Matt King… prototype tester

I caught up with Matt King today & thought it would be a good chance to get some pics of his current bike.

Matt has been testing the Hell Stallion frame now for about 6 months or so. He says it’s the best frame he has ridden.

Matt is also testing the Oneway CrMo pegs for us at the moment too. They will be out in August this year & weigh in at 150grams. Another new item Matt is testing for us is the Clone cassette with the ceramic bushing driver. These will be out June this year.

Transformer Lever product highlight

We were first to take the humble brake lever as we all know them to new heights when we introduced precision CNC machined quality with our Transformer Levers. We were also the first to introduce the lack of a need for the useless barrel adjuster.

Our levers are half the weight of any other lever on the market today. Sure, they are more expensive but like anything these days, you get what you pay for.

Expect to see other levers on the market soon that are inspired by our pioneering work. Always insist on the original though… the Colony Transformer Lever, available in normal & Trigger versions in a variety of colours.

Fantastic Plastic Pedals

We have been working on these for a while now & I thought it was time to release some teaser details to everyone out there.

Our ‘Fantastic Plastic’ pedals will feature a very light weight & inexpensive design. They will also feature 8 steel fully replaceable pins per pedal. You can choose to run these steel pins or not. Totally up to you.

The computer images shown don’t show the logo or unique grip pattern that will be all over them. They will be available in a wide variety of colours.

More details will be released soon including pics of the first samples.

Expect these to be available August this year.

Clone Hubs… How are they made?

Ever wondered how a BMX hub is made? Well wonder no more !! 99% of high end BMX hubs are made the following way…

rawhub0.jpgrawhub1.jpg
Start with a solid rod of alloy material & place it in the 20,000 tonne cold press.

rawhub4.jpgrawhub2.jpg
Press the ‘go’ button & within 2 seconds you have the basic shape of a cassette hub.

rawhub3.jpgclonehubsdone.jpg

The hub shell is then machined down to its finished shape & the axle & hardware assembled into the shell.

Done, easy as that. Well, not that easily done. Cassette hubs have so many intricate parts & need to be made to exacting tolerances that they are actually a difficult part to make. But worth all that extra work in the end for our bikes & how they ride.

Yo yo !!

Clone Hubs are getting closer…

Finally, after a year of testing & development we have arrived at our final design for our highly anticipated Clone Hubs.

The front hub features a 7075T6 bolt style axle with 10mm bolts & special hardware. It has a very small shell design & will only come in 36 hole. The front hub weighs in at a mere 223 grams (0.49lbs)

The cassette hub features a ceramic bush inside the 9T driver. This design is much stronger & eliminates the failures caused by bearings exploding. We will offer an exclusive ONE YEAR WARRANTY on the driver. This kind of warranty is an industry first.

The axle is CrMo & is hollowed out & accepts an 8mm allen key for easy maintenance. The hub shell itself is as small as possible & will only be available in 36 hole. Left or Right hand drive versions will be offered & it has no titanium to be found, yet weighs in at an impressive 394grams (0.866lbs)

The Clone Hubs will be available worldwide late June 2008 in Black, Red or Purple.

Report from Taiwan

We have been here in Taiwan the last few days working on the 2009 range of products. All is progressing to plan & I am very happy with the new products we have in the works.

For 2009 we will have a plastic pedal out which will be very light & inexpensive, our 2 piece cranks, CrMo Oneway pegs, front bolt style hub, cassette hub with ceramic bearing in the driver which we will offer a ONE year warranty. (This kind of warranty is an industry first) We also have a freecoaster coming out as well.

Add all these to the Hell Stallion frame & fork, Mick Bayzand ‘Teddy Bars’, The Cube flatland frame as well as a whole flatland range. Things are looking good for 2009 & Colony. More on all these in the coming weeks/months.

I am over here with Mark Matthews-Frederick, who is my right hand man when it comes to designing the parts you see from Colony. Read on below to get the low down on Mark & his job within Colony.

marktrails.jpg
Mark at his family trails back in Stanthorpe.

* So what’s your age and how long have you been riding for?

I’m 24 and have been riding pretty much all my life but BMX became an addiction for me in ’96.

* What got you into riding?

My brother and watching Jay Miron shred the King of Dirt on the old Wide World of Sports when I was about 11.

* What is your normal job?

I am an Industrial Designer for a train manufacturer, which means I design interior and exteriors of trains taking care of things like function, safety, comfort, looks, manufacturing and assembly.

* How did you get involved with the design side of things with Colony?

Well I have done a bit of bike design stuff in the past and Clint saw some of my work on the web, got in touch when he needed a hand with some more technical stuff and I’ve been working with Colony now for nearly 2 years.

* Has that always been something that you’ve wanted to work towards?

Yeah, for sure! I have always loved product design, so to combine it with something I have a real passion for is awesome.

* Please explain exactly what you do within Colony?

I work with Clint and Chris and the team guys in thinking up new parts, then detail the concept to maximise strength, function, looks, lightweight, etc. until we have a part that we are happy with, then I do the drawings so our manufacturers can create the part.

* What qualifications do you have for designing?

I have a Graduate Diploma in Industrial Design, which is a four year University course. Hard work but good fun.

* I believe this is your first trip over-seas? How do you like it so far?

Yeah its been awesome to learn the finer details of how all of our parts are made, and great talking engineering with the manufacturers over here, even though the language barrier hasn’t made it easy at times. Oh yeah and the food and beers here are pretty tops…

* Have you got the travel bug now?

Yeah a trip like this really opens up your eyes to what actually happens in other parts of the world. Our agent over here has really taken care of us so I have really enjoyed it.

* Any thanks?

My parents & family for all the good times, Clint and Chris for being cool, giving me the opportunity to do something I love and be part of the BMX industry; our agent here for helping us to make the best products we can and all the great experiences in the past few days; thanks to David from Fly Bikes for helping me to get to where I am today and everyone for supporting quality BMX companies like Colony.
